The Brower Center, in San Francisco, is according to the designers a ‘powerful model of sustainable, mixed-use development’.

It is expected to set specific targets and benchmarks for environmental efficiency and should get a LEED platinum rating, the highest possible from the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

The four story building will house ten environmental organisations and use the latest in energy-saving technologies.

Technology in the centre includes photovoltaic panels which will double as a sun shade device, 100% daylighting, reuse of rainwater for irrigation and toilet and high efficiency lighting with automatic controls to limit use when adequate

A spokesman for the centre said: “The architectural design of the Brower Center follows the example of some of Europe’s most distinguished recent green buildings in both its contextual fit and use of innovative technologies.”
