NEMEX Renewables Innovation Award sponsored by British Gas Business

The winners of this category were the Co-operative Group & Water Power Enterprises.

This renewable innovation was unique due to the collaboration of two organisations working together for a common goal and engaging the community.

Renewable Energy Project of the Year Award sponsored by Semplice Energy.

The winner of this category is Energos.

In December 2008 the Isle of Wight and ENERGOS, began operation of the UK’s first gasification plant to operate on waste. This is the first time that advanced thermal conversion technology has been applied to a UK waste stream – making available to the UK the first viable and proven alternative to incineration. This was a very interesting project and good example of a new type of opportunity where there is a need for a pragmatic solution to solving waste disposal problems.

The Energy Product/Service Award sponsored by the Energy Institute.

The winner of this category is Bright Ideas Global Ltd

It was difficult to separate the top two entries for this award. However the Bright Ideas Global entry was considered to be the most cost effective with a low entry cost. The fact that it was used via a USB port meant that it was accessible to all computer users and was also mobile.

All in all a well considered and simple to use cost effective energy saver readily accessible to all users.’ It demonstrated positive energy savings that all users could relate to.

The NQA Environmental Leadership Award for Cultural Change sponsored by NQA.

The winner is Centrica.

Their success is a testament to the commitment, enthusiasm and overwhelming keenness of employees to work together. A large organisation but they managed to get their environmental messages across to 27,000 staff through various initiatives driven from the top. In fact the quote from one of our judges was “This is a shining example of top down environmental leadership”

The NLS Innovation Award for Environmental Technology Sponsored by NLS.

The winner is Red Button Design

The simplicity of design was exceptional. And the potential for this product to change people’s lives throughout the world is huge – particularly in places where getting a clean and healthy water supply is such a huge problem.

Due to the high calibre of entrants this year the judges found it very difficult to decide between two particular entries and decided to also give a highly commended to Shiply Ltd.

The Environmental Science Student Awards Initiative sponsored by Adventus. This was a new award for 2009 and gives students the opportunity to be rewarded for their innovative thinking and creative approach to long standing issues.

There were 2 overall winners of the Environmental Science Students Award:

Elizabeth Padilla-Crespo of the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, for her work on “Application of an Oligo-nucleotide Microarray for Reductive Dechlorination Biomarker Identification and Process Monitoring”

And secondly, Behnaz Razavi of the University of California in Irvine, for her work on “Free-Radical-Induced Oxidative and Reductive Degradation of Fibrate Pharmaceuticals: Kinetic Studies and Degradation Mechanisms”.

The presentations were judged by representatives of Adventus and the Conference Scientific Advisory Board – on the criterion of originality, organization, research techniques and overall quality of work.

The Environmental Manager of the Year sponsored by e.on.

This year’s winner is Emma Devenish, from The Metropolitan Police

The standard of entries was once again very high this year, with some diverse companies being represented, both in sectors – from Hotels, to City Councils and size – a National Building company to a specialist Consultancy. Although all the final short listed entries encapsulated what a good Environmental Manager should be doing for their company, the judges unanimously decided the winning entry not only did all that was expected but also demonstrated, in a very difficult arena ,the ability to go that extra mile – a very worthy winner!

The Environment Product/service award Sponsored by edie.net.

The winner is ScotAsh.

The judges liked this concept using existing waste material from industrial processes and using it as raw materials to manufacture a new product.

Again the judges found that the standard of entries was exceptional and found it very difficult to agree a winner and it was very close so they have also decided to give a highly commended to Red Button Design.

media4change should be commended for their reusability and locally sourced approach.
