Michael Finneran, minister for housing and local services, opened the Sligo Town Wastewater Treatment Scheme.

The main objective when the plant was being designed was to make sure wastewater from Sligo town meets the stringent standards of the EU Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive and to improve water quality in the receiving waters.

The plant will provide treatment for about 50,000 people but it can also be expanded to process water for about 80,000 people.

The minister said the scheme ‘will be of major benefit not only to Sligo but to the region as a whole.’
