The Irish Greens were not in contention for any EU seats and lost all ten of their Dublin councillors.

On the other side of the Irish Sea, the Greens saw their share of the vote increase, with 270,000 more voters choosing green than in the 2004 elections, bringing their total to 1.2 million votes.

This is still well below their all time high of 2.2 million votes in 1989, however, and left them with just two MEPs, the same as before the elections.

There was good news in some isolated pockets, however, with the Green Party securing more votes than any other party in both Norwich and Brighton.

The representatives from these cities say they may switch their attention to Westminster in the next general election.

Across the continent the Greens secured 34 seats in the European Parliament, with Germany accounting for 13 and France electing six.
