New ecology capabilities at TNEI

TNEI has extended the range of Planning and Environmental consultancy services it offers to clients with the appointment of a qualified ecological consultant.

Claire Snowball joins TNEI with four years experience in ecological consultancy and is a full member of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management, IEEM.

Claire has a BSc(Hons) in Zoology and an MSc in Wildlife Conservation and Management and is licensed by Natural England, the Countryside Council for Wales and Scottish Natural Heritage to carry out surveys on great crested newts, and by Natural England to carry out surveys on bats.

In recruiting Claire, TNEI has extended the Planning and Environmental services it offers to clients and can now provide the following ecological services:

· Desk based ecological study and consultation

· Extended Phase 1 habitat surveys

· Detailed botanical surveys

· Great crested newt surveys

· Bat roost surveys (including building inspection and tree risk assessment)

· Bat activity surveys (including emergence/dawn swarming and transect surveys)

· Remote bat monitoring, including “at height” work (e.g. on meteorological masts)

· Otter, water vole, badger and red squirrel surveys

· Reptile surveys

· Ecological BREEAM assessments

The new extended capabilities compliment and enhance the existing range of Environmental Impact Assessment, planning and technical services TNEI already provides.

Since joining TNEI in March ’09, Claire has been involved in organising ecological surveys for a series of micro-turbine developments in urban and suburban areas, as well as co-ordinating, managing and undertaking ecological surveys for larger wind farm developments in rural areas.

TNEI’s Planning and Environmental team can now provide ecological services and advice to inform feasibility studies and planning applications for small and large scale developments as well as providing ecological reports for inclusion in Environmental Statements.

Prior to joining TNEI Claire was responsible for carrying out habitat and protected species surveys and ecological assessments for a wide range of projects throughout Great Britain for single developers, Government bodies, local authorities and multi-national corporations.

Commenting on Claire’s appointment, Andy Edgar principal consultant and group head of TNEI’s Planning and Environmental Group explained:

“Claire’s appointment consolidates the expertise TNEI has to offer and ensures that all ecological survey work can now be conducted in-house and feed into the wider planning and environmental services the team offers.

TNEI’s new ecological consultancy capabilities are already in great demand and TNEI is looking to recruit other ecologists as the workload grows.
