SLR helps secure planning for quarry extension

Environmental consultancy SLR Consulting has helped secure planning approval for the extension of Ball Mill Quarry, in Worcestershire, after a planning inquiry.

SLR prepared the original planning application which was recommended for approval by planning officers but was initially rejected by local councillors.

At the planning inquiry SLR technical director Stewart Lenton was part of a team of experts who provided evidence on technical issues including planning, landscape, geology and agricultural land quality.

The approval gives quarry operator Tarmac the green light to remove a further 540,000 tonnes of sand and gravel.

Stewart, who works in SLR’s Nottingham office, said: “Our argument for approval was strong in light of the fact that the county already has a shortfall in terms of aggregates permissions.

“The extension to the quarry is relatively small in tonnage terms but, from a sustainability perspective, it is important to quarry this area now – when the rest of the site is still active.”
