Edie award winner through to ‘European finals’

Edie's awards scheme has acted as a springboard to Europe for one of last year's winners, allowing them to represent the UK as environmental projects from across the continent go toe to toe.

The scheme that won the award for best water project at last year’s Awards for Environmental Excellence will now compete in Europe.

Last November, the Coal Authority won the award for its ground-breaking approach to protecting the fresh water table in areas surrounding disused mines that are prone to flooding.

Without its work, whole aquifers could be contaminated with minewater, potentially making them un-drinkable forever.

The edie-administered awards are accredited by the RSA, making them one of just a handful of schemes that entitles winners to be nominated for the EU’s biannual European Business Awards for the Environment.

The 2010 awards are now open for entries – with a closing date of May 26.

There are awards for a broad spectrum of categories, from waste & recycling to carbon reduction, sustainable transport to construction.
