The group, which has more than 1150 members, was formed following last month’s announcement that no new participants will be eligible for Canada’s federal ecoENERGY grants to help pay for home energy efficiency upgrades.

The scheme offer grants of up to $5,000 to home owners to encourage them to install green energy equipment to their homes, but had the plug pulled at short notice.

Green campaigners believe the move will not just hit environmental causes but also the nation’s economic recovery.

One of the organisers of the protest Clifford Maynes, executive director of Green Communities Canada, said: “Cancelling ecoENERGY is a serious mistake.

“Canadians who want to see the ecoENERGY Program restored need to make their voices heard.”

The Facebook group encourages members of the public to write letters to politicians, including prime minister Stephen Harper.

A spokesman for the Canadian government said: “The ecoENERGY Retrofit – Homes program is no longer accepting bookings for pre-retrofit evaluations.

“The program will continue to be administered until March 31, 2011. If you have already booked an appointment for a pre-retrofit evaluation, have completed an evaluation or applied for re-entry to the program, you remain eligible to apply for a grant.”
