Waitrose pulls low waste milk cartons

High end supermarket chain Waitrose has pulled cartons of milk from its shelves after customers failed to take to the waste cutting product.

The John Lewis owned food retailer introduced a reusable jug and accompanying cartons of milk in order to cut waste from the popular product.

Customers bought the jug filled with milk initially and then purchased easily recyclable cartons instead of plastic bottles from then on.

But a spokeswoman told edie.net that despite initial ‘success’ customers did not take to the cartons.

This led to an ‘unacceptable’ amount of milk going to waste, which forced the retailer to pull the plug on the scheme.

The spokeswoman added that more recycled plastic had been added to its milk bottles as a result of ending the scheme, but could not say how much the increase was.
