The MP for Eastleigh, who lost a bitter leadership contest to Nick Clegg, has a background in journalism and economics.

The new cabinet meet today (May 13) for the first time with Lib Dems taking up positions of power for the first time in 80 years in a coalition with the Conservatives.

His appointment will be seen as a snub to the Lib Dem’s Simon Hughes who was the party’s energy spokesman.

However, Mr Hughes is seen as the left-wing of the party and by giving the job to the more moderate Mr Huhne could be seen as a concession to the party’s new coalition partners.

The Lib Dem’s have long stated their opposition to Labour’s plans to continue investing in nuclear power, but it unclear how this policy will sit with the new deal.
