Atkins, the UK’s largest engineering design consultancy, will be providing strategic support services to Scottish Water to help the company deliver its capital works programme over the next five years. The programme covers the Q&SIIIb regulatory period which has a value of around £2.5 billion and runs from 2010 until 2015.

Atkins will be providing a range of professional services across six major frameworks, covering services including asset performance and business planning; non-infrastructure design; water infrastructure design; wastewater infrastructure design; wastewater modelling; and dams and reservoirs.

Mick Foote, managing director of Water Operations at Atkins, said: “The frameworks cover a broad array of technical requirements and we will draw on expertise from across the business in order to fulfil the client’s needs. This is where Atkins excels though because of the depth and breadth of our consultancy business. Our approach of partnering with clients will also be vital as we must ensure that we’re not only delivering the highest quality of work but we’re doing it in a time-critical and cost-effective way. The regulator has set challenging efficiency targets but our long history and excellent relationships with Scottish Water will help us to help them to deliver.”

Ken Hutchison, asset and investment manager at Scottish Water, said: “We look forward to continuing our working relationship with Atkins. Scottish Water is embarking on a £2.5 billion investment programme, which is, per household, one of the largest in the UK water industry. It is our aim during this investment programme to continue the good work and put Scottish Water on a par with the best in the UK water industry. Our partners will be central in delivering on our objectives of driving up performance in drinking water quality, protecting the natural environment and service improvements, such as reducing interruptions to supply.”

Atkins’ appointment to these frameworks follow on from the consultant’s recent appointment to the £5 million Marine Survey Services framework and the appointment of Faithful + Gould, its management and cost consultancy business, to the Cost Management Framework.
