Clean energy groups challenge coal permit in US

Environmental groups are opposing a business deal which would see millions of tons of coal being exported from Northwest Ports in the US to China.

Climate Solutions, a non-profit environmental organisation, says that the proposed coal exports would reverse major commitments by the government to reduce the state’s contribution to global warming pollution.

The organisation, believes this is a contradiction when the government are investing in clean technology jobs for wind, wave and solar energy.

They raise concerns about the health risks of air pollution from coal dust and mercury from coal-fired power plants in China.

A permit was approved by the local area Cowlitz County commissioners for port development, which would see Australian company Millennium Bulk Logistics ship 6 million tons of coal through the port to China.

Climate Solutions, along with other environmental groups, are appealing the permit decision to the state Shorelines Hearings Board.

Climate Solutions policy director K.C. Golden said: “Coal companies are targeting Washington as a gateway for coal export to China.

“It flies in the face of the state’s commitment to climate solutions and leadership in the clean energy economy.”

The appeal is lodged with Washington State’s Shorelines Hearings Board, who the groups are asking to invalidate the permit.
