Working with waste recovery business Tetronics the firm hopes to crack the problem of spent pot liner (SPL).
The deal will see Mitsubishi and Tetronics working together to treat SPL, which contains concentrations of both cyanide and fluoride and gives off noxious and flammable gases when in contact with moisture.
SPL, which is a hazardous waste by-product, is created routinely during the manufacturing of aluminium and is a growing problem for the manufacturing industry.
According to Tetronics unless it’s carefully handled it can leach into soils and groundwater during both short term and long term storage and becomes a source of potential pollution.
Tetronics chief executive, Stephen Davies, believes the safe and permanent disposal of SPL is an issue that ‘challenges the global primary aluminium production sector’.
He said: “This unpleasant and toxic waste needs to be handled with extreme care and experience.”
Tetronics’ will use a system that separates and destroys the hazardous components of SPL leaving a non‐hazardous material behind, which can be easily disposed of.
