The Cwmbran facility has been built in response to increasing recycling rates in the region. It will process glass for councils and household waste sites, as well as private companies who provide bottle bank and kerbside collections.

Until now there has only been one material recovery facility (MRF) processing glass in South Wales, resulting in much of the recycled material being sent up to the north of England – something which has become increasingly impractical due to rising transport costs.

Recresco site manager Karl Fenton said: “This new facility will support and enhance the waste industry and the community by reprocessing locally sourced waste glass and reusing it in local businesses. Wasteful haulage miles are being eliminated and it is creating local jobs.”

Recresco uses the latest glass sorting technology which means the Cwmbran facility can process 10 tonnes of glass by colour every hour. Currently the site is operating at 50% capacity, with full capacity expected by the end of the year.
