Energy minister to face police probe

Police are due to decide whether energy secretary, Chris Huhne, will face a criminal investigation into driving offences this week.

The Lib Dem minister, who strenuously denies any wrong doing, faces allegations that he illegally pressurised aides to take speeding penalty points for him.

The allegations relate to an offence in 2003, when Mr Huhne was a Member of the European Parliament (MEP), three years before he became an MP.

Essex Police’s Det Supt Tim Wills, who is investigating the allegations reported to involve a speeding offence in Southend, said: “We take any allegations of criminal offences extremely seriously.

“However, an investigation will not be formally launched until our enquiries show that an offence has been committed, this is the work my team and I will be carrying out this week.”
