British Conservative MEPs voted against the wishes of prime minister, David Cameron, and ignored heavy lobbying by the Governments of both France and Germany.

The vote, today (July 5), is also a further blow to Europe’s leaders after Poland blocked another climate change cutting drive.

However the vote, which was postponed from last month, is non-binding and European leaders could overturn it later this year.

Christian Aid’s head of advocacy and influence, Paul Brannen, promised to keep up the pressure on MEPs.

He said: “We knew the vote in Strasbourg would be close but we are particularly disappointed British MEPs voted against their own government on the issue.

“European countries must introduce cuts of 30% as an absolute minimum to tackle the climate crisis, and allow the EU to play a leadership role in the international climate negotiations in Durban at the end of the year.

“Campaigners will now redouble their efforts to show ministers the necessity of moving to that figure.”
