The minister said Contracts for Difference were needed to ensure there was ‘no drop off’ during the transitional period.

While fellow MPs, including Energy and Climate Change Committee chairman Tim Yeo, voiced concerns over how quickly the system would be ready to go.

There were also concerns voiced over the finer details of the new scheme, which were not revealed when Mr Huhne addressed Parliament today (July 12).

Mr Huhne said: “The government is extremely serious about the urgency of getting the legislation through and indeed of issuing the contracts.

“We will, I hope, be able to issues the first contracts in 2013.”
