Receiving the award is Philip Chappell, who gained recognition for his “outstanding contribution to incident and emergency planning”, as well as work in his local community and for helping severely disadvantaged children in Uganda.

In particular, Mr Chappell was recognised by the EA for his efforts in dealing with extreme flooding in Yorkshire.

EA director in Yorkshire and the North East David Dangerfield, said: “Phil’s expertise has been invaluable to the Environment Agency and our partners over many years, especially during Yorkshire’s extreme floods in 2000 and 2007 when he was instrumental in managing our emergency response.

“Beyond his considerable professional commitments, he still finds the time and energy to make a difference to life in his community and in East Africa where he helps orphaned children towards a better life.”

In 2006, Mr Chappell took up the role of UK coordinator for the Revival Life Christian Ministry based in Uganda.

As a result of Mr Chappell’s funding raising efforts, the amount of money sent to Uganda each month tripled to reach more than £3,000, with the finance used to improve the lives of underprivileged and vulnerable children.

A new clinic, a farm and educational facilities have also been established as a direct result of his work to develop the UK support network for the Revival Centre.
