Stopping ‘buy one, get one free’ (BOGOF) deals was narrowly rated the best method for supermarkets to reduce food waste (27% of votes), ahead of better product labelling (26%), maximising recovery options (24%) and longer life packaging (23%).

With no one clear winner, the results suggest that major food retailers need to implement a variety of solutions in order to effectively cut down on the amount of unsold food left in-store once the sell-by-date expires.

Nearly 800 respondents voted on the poll, following the news that Sainsbury’s has altered its product labelling to help stop up to £2bn worth of food being wasted each year.
