The natural cosmetics firm has just completed construction of an industrial straw bale cold room at its site in Hamworthy, Dorset, and intends to take sustainable manufacturing one step further with this new project.

According to the company’s green manufacturing co-ordinator Nick Read, the facility could become “the greenest factory in Europe, possibly the world” and said the project would offer a lot of scope to utilise sustainable materials and features that could be integrated into the fabric of the building.

“This means they shouldn’t cost much more and the running costs should be lower – but also the carbon footprint will be tiny,” he told edieWaste.

He added that the site the company are considering would be powered by gas extracted from a nearby landfill which could effectively make it off-grid.

There are also plans to utilise some of the estate to grow produce that can used as ingredients in the company’s product range, which would also lower their carbon impact.
