Tarmac signs national recycling agreement with Biffa

The UK's largest road surfacing and maintenance company Tarmac has signed a deal with Biffa to manage its waste and recycling services across the country.

According to Tarmac, the deal will help boost environmental performance. Following the introduction of a dry mixed recycling service, Tarmac sites working with Biffa increased recovery rates from 4 tonnes per month in 2011 to 30 tonnes per month in 2012.

In addition, general waste has fallen on average by 47 tonnes per month. According to Tarmac’s head of sustainability Dr Martyn Kenny, the new agreement will minimise company waste arisings further.

He said: “Working with Biffa will help Tarmac achieve our targets and I am looking forward to a successful partnership that delivers real results for our business in the immediate future and takes Tarmac one step closer to realising our zero waste to landfill aspiration.”

The dry mixed recycling service Biffa has implemented enables cardboard, paper, newspapers, plastic films/bottles and steel aluminium cans to be put into one bin before being processed at a MRF.

According to Biffa’s recycling director Michael Topham, the scheme will reduce Tarmac’s costs by removing the need to sort waste and cutting down on the number of waste containers required.
