Premiership stars back Nike’s renewable football boots

Claimed to be the “most environmentally friendly boot available” on the pitch, every component of the GS2 boot has been optimised to reduce weight and waste, creating Nike’s lightest football boot ever at 160 grams, based on a size 9.

The new boot is the second generation of Nike’s GS launched last summer and looks to build on the company’s ambitions to become a leader in the field of more sustainable sports and lifestyle apparel.

Conceived and engineered in Italy, recycled and renewable materials feature throughout the GS2 upper and plate design. A bio-based traction plate made primarily from castor beans lends strength and flexibility on pitch, alongside a sock liner made from 100% castor beans.

In addition, the lightweight sockliner has no topcloth or screening, optimising material use by eliminating additional weight and processing.

The boot laces, lining and tongue are made from a minimum of 70% recycled materials while the toeboard and collar feature at least 15% recycled materials.

Nike has also ensured there will be no loss in performance with the new boots, which have been engineered using a special technology to deliver enhanced ball control in both dry and wet weather conditions.

The Nike GS2 will be worn by some of Europe’s best young players including Arsenal’s Theo Walcott, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling.
