Manchester United loses premier position in CRC league table

The construction sector performed strongly this year with the top spot going to Bam Group, followed by Skanska in second and Carillion in seventh place. Motorola came in third, and Manchester City Council ensured the city made the top five, despite United’s performance, at number four. Bradford & Bingley followed in fifth.

The CRC Performance League Table (PLT), published today by the Environment Agency, ranks almost 3,000 organisations on their energy efficiency performance for the year 2011/12. Last year’s table was the first, and this year’s, the second, will be the last, after the Government announced its abolition in last year’s Autumn Statement as part of a ‘simplification’ of the CRC scheme.

The reporting responsibilities will remain, as will the ‘tax’ element of the scheme – at least until public finances allow for its removal, but the Performance League Table will no longer be published. Widely criticised from its inception, the main objection to the PLT is that is gives too much weight to year-on-year improvements, meaning those companies that were or are already further along the energy efficiency journey, may be penalised as they find it harder to drive the kinds of improvements those starting from scratch can. Manchester United is a case in point, sliding from number one to 488 despite a clear commitment to energy use reduction.
