Defra consults on waste management plan for England

Defra has issued a consultation on a Waste Management Plan for England as part of its requirements under the revised Waste Framework Directive (rWFD).

The rWFD requires member states to produce at least one waste management plan for the regions they cover. The plan itself is a compilation of existing waste management information and policies.

It will however also be complemented by waste planning policy from the Department for Communities & Local Government (DCLG) which sets out considerations relating to the location of waste infrastructure. DCLG will be consulting on an updated planning for sustainable waste management later this summer.

In a covering explanation, Defra stressed that the purpose of the plan was not to introduce new waste management measures, but rather to ascertain how it will fulfil obligations under article 28 of the rWFD.

The consultation closes on August 9.
