The money, from the London Waste and Recycling Board (LWARB), will be used to improve or expand recycling collections at the kerbside, including those for food, garden waste and bulky items.

Renewed focus on collections from flats is also being encouraged, as are improvements to Household Waste and Recycling Centres. Cash is also available for monitoring and communications.

LWARB anticipates funding no more than 10 projects, with a maximum funding per project of £200,000.

Councillor Clyde Loakes, LWARB Efficiencies Committee chair, said projects will be evaluated on the basis of their value for money, partnership working, project performance monitoring and their ability to deliver savings for authorities by cutting disposal costs.

“The fund will allow boroughs to either roll out new or to improve existing schemes as well as looking at new ways to make recycling as easy as possible for Londoners,” he added.

Funding will be allocated on a competitive basis through a single round. The deadline for receipt of applications is November 4, 2013.

Studies have shown that doubling the current London recycling rate of 32% could save councils up to £320m by 2015.
