Auto Windscreens recovered 775 tonnes of old windscreens from January to June this year and sent it all to glass recycling company Berryman. Last year it did the same with 966 tonnes of damaged vehicle glazing – also known as cullet.

Glass can be reused many times in varying percentages, depending on the clarity of the glass being produced. The glass from cars makes up around 10-15% of each ‘new’ bottle.

“As an industry we are responsible for what happens to damaged glass removed from our customers’ vehicles and we recycle 100% of it,” said Vanessa Jones, Auto Windscreens health and safety manager.

She added: “I like the thought that I could be drinking from a bottle that is made partly of a windscreen once belonging to perhaps a Porsche 911, or even a Lamborghini Gallardo.”
