The data covering the period from April to June 2013 shows the highest rate achieved for an April to June period, according to Defra.

The statistics also show that the annual household waste recycling rate rose slightly to 43.3% in the 12 months to June 2013, having remained at just over 43% since March 2012.

Local authority managed waste going to landfill or incineration was 1.3% higher in April to June 2013 compared to the same period in 2012 but is 32% lower than in the same period in 2006.

Waste recycling and composting volumes are seasonal with increased amounts of organic/garden waste between April and September.

England still lags behind Wales with its recycling rate. Last year, Wales met its first annual statutory waste target by recycling more than 50% of rubbish collected by councils. The EU target is for a 50% recycling rate by 2020.

Speaking to edie.net about the new figures, Ricardo-AEA practice director for resource efficiency and waste management Adam Read said: “As expected – slow growth! The plateau effect in full force! Budget cuts have impacted on communication activities.”
