Innovative technology to recycle blackwater (sewage) into a drinkable product is being developed by Melbourne-based Envirozel (formerly Zeolite). A pilot plant providing up to 35,000L/day will use the technology in Melbourne City Council’s planned ‘green’ headquarters. The technology could dramatically reduce the amount of potable water used to irrigate sports facilities and schools although theoretically people could drink the recycled water.

Californian consultants Earth Tech have been selected to design, build, finance and operate a new 30 million L/day ultra-filtration membrane treatment plant, the largest membrane-based facility in Australia. The US$38 million project will supply class A recycled water for horticulture, public space, irrigation, third pipe systems and industry.
