The food giant stated its vision is for none of its packaging to end up as landfill or as litter.

Nestlé said it focuses on three key areas; remove non-recyclable; encourage the use of plastics that allow better recycling rates; and eliminate or change complex combinations of packaging materials.

“Plastic waste is one of the biggest sustainability issues the world is facing today,” Nestlé’s chief executive Mark Schneider said. “Tackling it requires a collective approach. We are committed to finding improved solutions to reduce, re-use and recycle.”

Nestlé has vowed to play an “active role” in the development of recycling schemes across the country where it operates. It has also pledged to work with different stakeholders to explore different packaging solutions to reduce waste.

The latest pledge forms part of the company’s ambition to become a zero-waste business. All Nestlé UK and Ireland factories have been operating with a verified zero-waste-to-landfill status since 2015, with waste food being sent to animal feed and to generate biogas.

The corporate sphere has been awash with plastic pledges since the start of 2018. The likes of McDonald’s, Waitrose, Hotel du Vin and Costa in agreeing to phase-out plastic use in some shape or form

These pledges came hot off the heels of Iceland’s commitment to become the world’s first major retailer to remove plastic packaging from its own brand products by 2023.
