Brought to you in association with E.ON, episode 57 of edie’s Sustainable Business Covered podcast ultimately breaks down what it takes to become an effective sustainability leader.

First up, the team reflects on former Unilever chief executive Paul Polman’s acceptance speech for his Lifetime Achievement Award at the Sustainability Leaders Awards earlier this month. This episode offers a 5-minute glimpse of the speech, which sees Polman focus on leadership involvement with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Watch Polman’s speech in full here.

Next up, edie’s Matt and Sarah catch-up with the Sustainable Business of the Year Award-winner Heathrow Airport, as the organisation’s sustainability and environment director Matt Gorman reflects on a great night for the firm. Gorman offers insight into how Heathrow’s new sustainability strategy has elevated the organisation to a leadership status, and explores the challenges ahead as the Airport embarks towards the construction of its third runway.

Sarah then travels to Greenwich for a whistle-stop tour of Ikea’s new store, considered its most sustainable in the UK to date. Incidentally, Ikea was the winner of edie’s CSR Engagement/Marketing Campaign of the Year at the recent Awards, and Sarah sits down with country sustainability manager for Ikea UK & Ireland, Hege Sæbjørnsen, to explore some of the innovative sustainability aspects on offer at the store. Read Sarah’s full feature on the new store here.

Then, the edie team explores how the publication’s parent company Faversham House is attempting to practice what it preaches when it comes to sustainability. Alongside the installation of innovative energy-saving computer software, Faversham House has created a new Environmental Taskforce. In this episode, we sit down with the Taskforce’s lead, Eshcon’s founder Anya Ledwith, to find out how the organisation is mobilising internal action on sustainability.

And finally, the team bids farewell to Insight Editor George, who makes an emotional departure from both the podcast and the organisation as he moves into a new role at Defra. George reflects on his high points of the podcast (while the team reflects on the rest).
