Going 100%: How landlords hold the key to corporate renewable energy targets

Last updated: 27th June 2019

This brand-new edie report developed in partnership with Big Clean Switch and The Climate Group's RE100 campaign sheds light on the relationship between landlords and tenants on the big issue of renewable energy.

The report, based on a survey which asked end-user businesses about how they have been engaging with their landlords and managing agents around energy and sustainability, specifically focuses on the big challenge of the transition to renewable energy. It considers the relationship between tenants and landlords which, if improved, could fundamentally alter the way that UK offices and commercial buildings are powered.

The survey sheds light on a number of key challenges that must be overcome if companies are to effectively engage with their property owners to fulfil their renewable energy goals. For one, there are some significant communication and cultural differences between many businesses and their landlords, which can cause obstacles. On-site technology installations and associated metering requirements, meanwhile, can pose their own logistical challenges.

Titled ‘Going 100%: How landlords hold the key to corporate renewable energy targets’, the survey was taken in May this year by some of the biggest tenants in the country, including PwC, Nando’s, Burberry as well as by landlords such as LandSec.

At a time when the UK Parliament has declared a national climate emergency as well as a net zero carbon emissions target for 2050, the challenging to switch to a renewable energy provider is a pertinent one. The report looks at the big issue and makes a series of recommendations based on the findings for landlords and tenants to consider.
