Mission Possible: edie launches new sustainable business report for the retail sector

The report is free to download

edie’s insight report series provides an in-depth exploration of the steps that sustainability and energy professionals within Britain’s retail industry can take to achieve a sustainable future, today.

Following the UK Government’s announcement of a net-zero target by 2050, many retailers have moved quickly; partnering with property landlords, other retailers, trade associations and other key stakeholders to develop ambitious net-zero strategies which cover Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.

This sector insight report, developed in association with Inspired Energy, demonstrates what net-zero carbon looks like across the retail space. Specifically, the report is structured around four of the key pillars of edie’s Mission Possible campaign, which also represent four key pathways to net-zero: energy, resources, the built environment, and transport & logistics.

Whilst many of the challenges within each of these areas are unique, it is clear that innovation is required across all of them in order to achieve a net-zero carbon retail sector by 2050.

This report was researched and written in the early months of 2020, when the impacts of coronavirus were not yet being felt strongly and the UK was not in ‘lockdown’. The pandemic has of course had a profound impact on businesses across the country, and retail is no exception. With all non-essential shops closed, many sustainability and energy managers across the retail space have been furloughed, and associated announcements and investments delayed or cancelled as companies look to cut expenses, preserve cash and focus on overcoming the crisis at hand.

This is not to say corporate sustainability is being entirely ignored, however, and many retailers have in fact placed an increased focus on this area (particularly through the rollout of social sustainability and local sustainable development initiatives) as part of their immediate response to the pandemic.
