#SustyTalk: Hitachi Europe’s Hans Daems on the evolution of CSR in the new normal

edie's #SustyTalk interview series continues with Hitachi Europe's head of public affairs Hans Daems offering his thoughts on the evolution of corporate CSR as we begin to emerge out of lockdown and head towards a "new normal".

With the UK on lockdown (albeit now easing) and edie readers working remotely or on furlough, this brand new series of video interviews keeps you connected to the inspirational business leaders who are continuing to drive sustainability and champion climate action from their own homes.

#SustyTalk is all about keeping edie’s loyal readers connected to sustainable business leaders across the world, whilst reminding us all that sustainability and climate action must go on, through the current Covid-19 pandemic and beyond.

edie’s content editor Matt Mace speaks to Hitachi Europe’s head of public affairs Hans Daems, who oversees the company’s sustainability efforts. In the 18-minute chat, Daems outlines how the company, which has touchpoints with numerous different sectors, has coped during the pandemic and what the sustainability priorities are as lockdown begins to ease.

“The most essential point is how central [sustainability] is to your strategy, if it is a nice add on it’s not going to work, if it’s used as a message on social media, it’s not going to work,” Daems said. “Ultimately its how you reflect society in your management plans and strategies for the business.”

Daems also noted that the Sustainable Development Goals could act as a “shared language” to showcase renewed efforts to improve environmental and societal protections.
