After the Authority set a net-zero target for 2041, it recently unveiled a roadmap for getting there – taking into account the impact of the Covid-19 crisis.

Ed was recently appointed as WMCA’s director for public service reform, in addition to his post there as director for inclusive growth, after nine years as director of think-tank IPPR North.

In this interview with edie’s senior reporter Sarah George, he provides an overview of the 2041 roadmap and his thoughts on how local authorities should be working to embed environmental and social considerations into their pandemic recovery planning more broadly.

“Every climate change strategy needs to be specific to its own place,” Ed says. “But I do think the collaborative approach we’re trying to adopt here – recognising that it’s not just the combined authority, but also a whole range of other organisations… that are going to be key… is something other local areas could and should consider.”
