edie kicks off new COP26 Primer report series with Clean Energy focus

The series of reports are free to download for all edie users

edie’s Primer Reports are about seizing the green industrial opportunity of COP26. Produced in the run-up to the official talks, this mini-series of reports is based on the five key themes of COP26: Clean Energy, Clean Transport, Climate Resilience, Nature-Based Solutions, and Climate Finance.

First up in the new series of reports, edie’s Clean Energy Primer report. Sponsored by British Gas, the report explores how crucial clean energy is in overcoming the climate crisis and how the discussions at COP26 will create new tipping points for nations to seize the economic, societal and planetary benefits of delivering zero-carbon power grids.

From the enablers and accelerators to the global clean energy movement, to the political challenges and consequences of failing to deliver low-carbon energy sectors, this report acts as a timely state-of-play for global efforts to move away from fossil fuels by embracing renewables as part of a green recovery.

The report features a foreword from National Grid’s COP26 Director Duncan Burt, who states: “Ultimately, critical decisions and changes to the world’s energy infrastructure need to be made, which will be much easier said than done. For example, turning off coal globally would let us hit 2030 climate targets, however, the rapid decline would create issues for communities and employment around the world.

“The challenge at COP26 will be to provide the confidence, support and consensus on the way forward, supporting strategic decisions to decarbonise energy systems that will be made in administrations around the world.”

Countdown to COP26

Burt will also be speaking at edie’s flagship Countdown to COP26 event, which will take place virtually on Thursday 20 May. More than 250 business and climate leaders have already registered to attend the event, which forms an integral part of edie’s Countdown to COP26 Festival of digital content and events. The Primer reports form part of this digital collection of content.

Supported by headline partner O2, edie’s ountdown to COP26 Festival will inform and inspire businesses to seize the opportunity of the crucial UN climate talks which are being held in Glasgow this November. The Festival will run from May through to October, kicking off with this flagship eponymous virtual event on 20 May.
