Asda to move entire company car fleet to EVs by 2025

Asda has confirmed it will move its entire company car fleet of 600 vehicles to electric by 2025, a move that will save more than 2,000 tonnes of carbon emissions on the road to net-zero.

Asda is moving its entire company car fleet to electric vehicles (EVs) in the next four years. According to the retailer, the move will save more than 2,411 tonnes of CO2 – the equivalent of more than six million miles driven by an average petrol-run car.

The decision was taken, in part, due to 85% of Asda workers who opted for a company car in their benefits packaging choosing an EV over the past 12 months. Additionally, company car tax percentage is just 1%, making it more cost effective for colleagues to switch to EVs.

Asda’s reward team senior manager Simon Bell said: “Reducing our carbon footprint is extremely important to us and our customers so we are always looking at ways in which we can make a difference and be a more sustainable business.

“We are delighted by the enthusiastic uptake in electric cars by our colleagues over the past few years and it is a win win, as they are helping the environment as well as reducing their own motoring costs.”

Net-zero

Last month, the company revealed that it reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 16% over the last year, as it builds towards a net-zero carbon goal set for 2040.

Asda is part of a coalition of retailers that has pledged to support a new collaborative roadmap to transform the sector and its supply chain to net-zero emissions by 2040.

Convened through the British Retail Consortium (BRC), more than 60 businesses have committed to a Climate Action Roadmap. The plan will help deliver a retail industry that will reach net-zero by 2040, including decarbonising stores by 2030, deliveries by 2035 and products by 2040.

Asda is aiming to reduce Scope 1 (operational) and 2 (power-related) emissions by 50% by 2025 against a 2015 baseline, as part of interim targets to support its net-zero ambition.

The retailer has committed to moving its entire heavy goods vehicle (HGV) fleet from diesel to gas by 2024, following biomethane trials that delivered emissions reductions of more than 80% compared to traditional vehicles. Asda currently has 300 gas-powered trucks, with another 200 set to be introduced next year.

The supermarket also plans to meet 50% of its total electricity needs from renewables by 2025.

That’s great – though actually *building* those vehicles will produce at least 9,000 tons of CO2 [15 tons per vehicle] .. unless car-makers can eliminate emissions up their supply chains.
