It has teamed up with the Scottish greens to speak out against the energy source, with Assembly member Brian Wilson saying that it is not the right way to fight climate change.

Mr Wilson said he welcomed the cooperation between Scottish and Northern Ireland greens.

He told the Belfast Telegraph: “Nuclear power is not the solution to climate change and energy security concerns.”

Robin Harper, the leader of the Green Party in Scotland, said: “We will be offering every support we can to their campaign to ensure Northern Ireland can, like Scotland, move towards a low-carbon and nuclear-free economy.”

He also said he was “staggered” to hear that the Democratic Unionist Party was backing Labour’s plans to develop a new generation of nuclear power stations.

The Comhar Sustainable Development Council in the Republic of Ireland recently called for an informed debate on the nuclear question.

It follows moves in the UK and Finland to build a new generation of nuclear power stations.
