Northern environment industry body announces second North East business environment month

The Environment Industries Federation (EIF), a business-led trade association set up two years ago in order to promote the interests of and further the aims of northern environmental businesses, is hoping that the North East Business Environment Month (NEBEM) will become an annual occurrence, following its success last year.

The event is designed to act as a platform for the promotion of the environmental products and services that the North East has to offer to a national and international audience. NEBEM is aimed at the industrial and commerical sectors, such as property and construction, professional services and manufacturers, and will feature events and seminars covering bioremediation, green commerce, renewable energy, waste and recycling, water management, and professional qualifications.

Recent research carried out by EIF revealed that in the North East of England the environment sector accounts for over 14,000 jobs, almost 750 companies, and over £516 million of the North East economy. The sector has developed particularly well in the region for a number of reasons, an EIF spokesperson told edie. The North East is home to world experts in land remediation, as a result of the contaminated land left behind by its industrial heritage, as well as a considerable renewable energy generation sector, particularly with regard to photovoltaics, and wind power resulting from the diversification of the off-shore industry (see related story).
