On-board computers reduce vehicle abuse

Linkload Municipal Vehicle Hire of Grays, Essex, has reduced the problem of abuse to its vehicles while on hire by equipping them with an ICS Black Box "Fleet Log FL01" on-board computer to monitor automatically vehicle performance and driving quality.

The ICS system provides for the monitoring and recording of nearly all driving activities plus the serviceability of the vehicles. Once the driver has been identified and the vehicle made mobile, trip start/stop times and mileage can be recorded, along with maximum speed, overspeeding details, idling time, oil pressure, high temperature and acceleration/deceleration levels. In-cab warning can be initiated if pre-set limits are approached or exceeded.

Automatic downloading of recorded data to a central management computer is carried out by a low-power radio frequency (RF) modem whenever the vehicle passes within 150 metres.

Based on this data, Fleet Log FL01 is able to generate some 80 different reports, which allow management to analyse every aspect of fleet efficiency and cost effectiveness.

Based on analysis of driver and vehicle performances data from various projects, ICS Black Box predicts potential cost savings of up to 30%.
