The EU’s Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH) regulations are expected to come into force next year and will have a far-reaching impact on industry as companies from across the supply chain find themselves affected.
Any firm which uses chemicals in significant quantities, or has a supplier who does, will need to know its obligations under the legislation, which is designed to tidy up the existing tangled mess of chemical law while going some way to protect public health and the environment.
On Friday, March 17 the CIA launched REACHReady, a website designed to help business get to grips with what has been billed as the most complicated piece of legislation ever to come out of Brussels.
Those who opt for the free service will be able to view regularly updated information pages and will receive reminders of legislative deadlines, letting them know when they need to have met obligations by under the new regulations.
For CIA members, or those prepared to pay an annual fee of £200 for the service, the website explains the scope of the regulations and whether a particular companies operations are likely to be affected as well as an outline of probable costs and a ‘match-making’ service to put people in touch with the relevant experts who can carry out tests on their behalf.
They will also be able to phone a call centre for queries that cannot be answered by the website.
At the launch Steve Elliott, the association’s chief executive said: “I am very proud to be launching this new service today to the chemical
industry and its customers.
“I truly believe CIA has the experience, expertise and key connections to ensure that REACHReady will offer a first-class service to its customers, enabling them to not only respond positively to this legislation but to gain a competitive edge over those who are slower off the mark.”
Although the legislation is yet to come into force, the website is already live and can be found at www.reachready.co.uk
