Siltbuster Process Solutions (SPS) says it came to the rescue with a packaged lamella DAF plant when South West Water (SWW) experienced significant raw water quality deterioration at its Bovey Cross Water Treatment Works (WTW) in Devon. The poor raw water quality reduced the output of the works during a busy holiday period, requiring the need to provide expensive tankering as a precautionary measure.

SPS delivered a D25 packaged lamella DAF plant and associated equipment within days of receiving the initial enquiry call. The company says DAF reduced incoming turbidity and enabled the works to operate at full capacity of up to 1Ml/d, eliminating the need for tankering.

Once SWW had seen the benefit of having the DAF unit in its armoury, Siltbuster says the utility decided to purchase an identical unit in case of similar circumstances arising in future. During the following summer season, high algae levels in the raw water supply had the potential to cause similar problems, but because of the DAF unit’s excellent performance at removing the algae, this time filter capacity was not ffected and the works continued to perform as normal.

Clwyd Jones, business unit manager for SPS, comments: “South West Water had a major issue to contend with and needed to find a solution quickly.

The team wanted to alleviate the pressure on the treatment works and knew we had the equipment to help.

“Having the unit on site and available for use when required was a great solution, exemplified when the algae issue arose the following season. This would have otherwise caused major difficulties for the site.”

Paul Mitchell, technical support and development manager at South West Water, adds: “We approached SPS because of its reputation and ability to rapidly supply compliant equipment suitable for potable water. The team’s expertise, flexible product offering and superb service put SPS in a class of its own.”

The Bovey Cross works is no longer required as the area is now served by another part of the network.

However, due to the packaged design of the DAF plant, it is now available for redeployment to another site.
