National Highways – A new life ‘in the sun’ for surplus snow gritters

Last updated: 10th May 2023

After securing a five-year contract with National Highways to breathe new life into its decommissioned fleet vehicles in October 2022, Ramco was tasked with finding new homes for their surplus snow gritters and ploughs.

It was during that time when Dion Tech, a European-based tech company, was on the hunt for second hand snow gritters. Offering snow removal services themselves, with contracts including the Greek Government, they stumbled upon Ramco’s specialist winter fleet auction. Now that’s what we call perfect timing!

They successfully purchased their first snow gritters at auction and, as a testament to our good relationship, have since bought over 25 more snow gritters and ploughs from Ramco.

But does it even snow in Greece?

Although we often associate hot summers, white beaches, and crystal-clear water with Greece – the winter months in some regions can look very different.

Dion Tech offers snow removal services in areas like Karditsa, Florina, Korinthia, the highway E65, as well as the highway from Athens to Lamia, which can be affected by snowfall during the winter months.

Valeria Donati, spokesperson from Dion Tech, explains: “There are several times of the year where we get very heavy snowfall in Greece, especially during January and February. This usually lasts for just a couple of weeks but still, the snow removal needs to be done and we need reliable vehicles for the job.”

A second lease of life in Greece

After the auction hammer went down, the vehicles were collected by a specialist transport firm in the UK who arranged their onward journey to Dion Tech in Greece.

Buying used machines is nothing new for Valeria, as she says: “Second hand equipment is still in good condition and is much cheaper and more environmentally friendly than buying new.”

That’s exactly why Ramco is here: to reuse surplus equipment and give it a second chance, meaning our customers get good equipment, save money and contribute to the circular economy at the same time.

On working with Ramco, Valeria concludes: “Quality of service and communication with the Ramco team has been great from start to finish, and for that reason we’ll be working together again in the future.”
