Best Practice Management of Healthcare Waste

Last updated: 24th November 2020

Cloud Sustainability's e-learning course 'Best Practice Management of Healthcare Waste' is based on the guidance developed by the Department of Health on the 'Safe Management of Healthcare Waste'. It aims to provide users with a comprehensive understanding of sustainable healthcare waste management and how to ensure their healthcare waste is managed in a responsible and legally compliant manner and in line with accepted best practice.

The course is broken down into three bite-size modules.

Module 1 provides an introduction to Healthcare Waste and how to correctly identify and classify it so you can meet specific legal requirements with its handling, storage, treatment and disposal.

Module 2 looks at the drivers and benefits of sustainable waste management and introduces important concepts that help embed sustainability principles, such as resource efficiency and the Waste Hierarchy.  This Module also looks at the healthcare waste colour-coded system and how this can be used to implement recognised best practice waste management.

Module 3 introduces the key waste legislation that exists in England and Wales and their main requirements.  The module covers legislation relevant to the management of healthcare waste and how this relates to the way in which waste should be handled, segregated, stored, managed and disposed.  It also looks at the key legal documents that are using for managing waste.
