Carbon Intelligence has supported 1 in 3 UK approved science-based targets

Last updated: 28th July 2020

Tackling climate change requires continuous ambition and commitment, and not losing momentum even when circumstances change.

2020 has uprooted the meaning of business as usual. Despite the pandemic and uncertainty we are proud that our clients have continued to demonstrate their climate ambition and commitment. 6 of our clients in law, manufacturing and commercial real estate have not let lockdown slow down their activities and have had their science-based targets (SBT) approved. An achievement worthy of celebration in a normal year, let alone 2020.

We believe that setting a science-based target is one of the strongest and most credible ways a company can demonstrate their commitment to tackling climate change. We have a long standing history with the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and have supported 1 in 3 UK companies that have an approved SBT*.

To date 38 companies in the UK have an approved science-based target, 14 of which were supported by our team of sustainability data and consulting experts.

Further to this we have supported 43% of all science-based targets aligned to 1.5°C in the UK. We pride ourselves on pushing our clients to the limits of their ambition and supporting their goals with strategies grounded in reality by using detailed data analysis and scenario modelling.

These include retail giant Tesco, big 4 firm KPMG UK, Canary Wharf Group, and soft drinks manufacturer Britvic to name but a few.

Why does a sustainable business need a science-based target?

Science-based targets are the only credible climate commitment that stand up to scrutiny and aligning to climate science should form the basis of any net zero target. The UK is committed to net zero by 2050, every business has a responsibility to step up. A company cannot credibly say they are tackling climate change without a robust strategy for net zero. Science-based targets are a great place to start understanding where your emissions are now and what you need to do to reduce.

A greenhouse gas emissions target can be considered ‘science-based’ if the emissions reductions it requires are in line with keeping the global temperature increase well-below 2°C compared to pre-industrial temperatures.

Science-based targets provide companies with a clearly defined pathway to future-proof growth by specifying how much and how quickly they need to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Targets are individually evaluated and approved by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Carbon Intelligence and science-based targets

  • We helped Canary Wharf Group become the first global commercial district to set a SBT.
  • We supported global law firm CMS to announce their net zero commitment backed by science-based targets

  • We supported Tesco to become the first corporate in the world to set an approved 1.5°C SBT
  • We helped Pukka Herbs become the smallest company in the UK to set an approved 1.5°C SBT
