Establishing leadership in carbon reduction
In 2007 Centrica embarked on its journey to cut its global internal carbon emissions from property, fleet and travel in half by 2025. As a market leader in energy solutions, Centrica is utilising its capabilities to embed sustainable technologies and behaviors across the business.
Technology and behavioural change
Across UK properties, Centrica made several changes to the way energy was generated, managed and consumed. A new, low carbon office was established in Oxford, capable of obtaining 30% of its energy from on-site and renewable technology. Centrica also rationalised property across North America and the UK to increase occupancy levels.
Fleet users and employees with company cars were encouraged to opt for hybrid or electric vehicles (EV), supported with the installation of EV charge points at nearly 50 sites. GPS tracking of 14,600 fleet vehicles delivered more efficient driving behaviours. Meanwhile, employees were encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel by using technology instead, such as video-conferencing.
These combined actions driven over the first eight-year target period led to a 27% reduction in global internal carbon emissions since 2007.
Property emissions reduced 44%, global fleet emissions were down 23% and company car emissions fell by 17%.
Consequently, Centrica experienced a 40% reduction in energy use per full time employee in the UK and a 30% drop in average tailpipe emissions from company cars. It also became the operator of the largest fleet of electric vans of its type in the UK. Centrica is now ramping up these efforts with the aim of achieving a further 20% drop in carbon emissions by 2025.
