Nando’s becomes the first restaurant group in Europe with an approved Science Based Target

Last updated: 28th July 2020

Carbon Intelligence has been supporting the global restaurant chain to measure, understand and set credible targets on its Scope 1, 2 & 3 emissions. Demonstrating their climate ambition and industry leadership Nando’s have now set approved Science-Based Targets to bring their direct emissions to absolute zero and further reduce the carbon footprint of their meals by 50% by 2030.

Henry Unwin, Head of Sustainability, Nando’s explained: “Working with Carbon Intelligence on our Science-based Target is the most recent, and most significant, step in our longstanding sustainability journey. Since 2015 we have reduced the carbon footprint of the average Nando’s meal by 40%. However, we know that this is not enough. What I love about the SBTi is that it ensures that our carbon reduction target is in line with what the latest climate science says is needed to meet the goals of the Paris Climate Change Agreement. I am delighted that, as a business, we have committed to going beyond the target recommended by the SBTi and have the first formally approved target of any restaurant group in Europe and one of the leading targets in our sector. Hitting this target is going to be tough, but we are determined to get there. Starting with moving all of our restaurants to renewable gas over the next two years and increasing our plant-based menu offer.”

Annabell James, Senior Sustainability Consultant, Carbon Intelligence, who works on the programme says: “We’re incredibly proud to have supported Nando’s to set these ambitious sustainability targets, which are backed by science and have been rigorously validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. Science-based targets reflect the level of action needed globally to help the world achieve the Paris Agreement commitment, where global warming remains well below two degrees. It’s fantastic to see the passion and ambition from the Nando’s team to play their part in tackling climate change by reducing emissions across their value chain.”

Carbon Intelligence considers setting a science-based target as one of the strongest and most credible ways a company can demonstrate their commitment to tackling climate change. We are proud to have now worked with 1 in 3 UK companies on their approved science-based targets. Find out more here.
