Impact advisory Seismic has announced its certification as a B Corporation (or B Corp), joining a growing group of companies reinventing business by pursuing purpose as well as profit.

Impact advisory and edie’s official B corp partner, Seismic, has announced its certification as a B Corporation (or B Corp), joining a growing group of companies reinventing business by pursuing purpose as well as profit. As they mark their first birthday, Seismic has been certified by B Lab, the not-for-profit behind the B Corp movement, as having met rigorous social and environmental standards which represent its commitment to goals outside of shareholder profit.

Seismic already shares close ties with the B Corp community as advisors to numerous businesses on their B Corp certification journey. “You have so many B’s to be proud of: your first Birthday, a certified B Corp, all celebrated in B Corp month. It was meant to B! Congratulations on a fantastic first year and many more to come,” says Katie Hill, CEO of B Lab Europe.

The B Corp certification addresses the entirety of a business’ operations and covers five key impact areas of Governance, Workers, Community, Environment and Customers. The certification process is rigorous, with applicants required to reach a benchmark score of over 80 while providing evidence of socially and environmentally responsible practices relating to energy supplies, waste and water use, worker compensation, diversity and corporate transparency. To complete the certification, Seismic legally embedded their commitment to purpose beyond profit in their company articles.

Seismic CEO and Cofounder, Paul Lewis, says “Seismic certified with 99 points on the BIA. It’s not perfect, but we are proud of certifying with this score a year after we launched Seismic. We’re up for the challenge now to improve on our score. We see B Corp as a framework to improve, using it to set up processes and scale our impact to make our business better.”

Seismic is now part of a community of 4,800 businesses globally who have certified as B Corps. The B Corp community in the UK, representing a broad cross-section of industries and sizes, comprises over 700 companies and includes well-known brands such as innocent drinks, Lily’s Kitchen, Sipsmith Gin and Pukka. Companies that Seismic has supported on their sustainability journeys.

Chris Turner, Executive Director of B Lab UK, says “We are delighted that Seismic is now a certified B Corporation. This is a movement of companies who are committed to changing how business operates and believe business really can be a force for good. Our friends at Seismic champion this movement every day, and they are an important addition to the B Corp community.”

“Welcoming Seismic is an exciting moment because they have already helped many businesses to certify as B Corps and trained many B Leaders – and now they can wave the B Corp flag too. Seismic’s commitment to doing business differently will be an inspiration to others and really help spread the idea that we can redefine success in business to be as much about people and planet as it is about profit”.

Faversham House, publisher of edie and Utility Week, has partnered with Seismic to support its own goal of becoming a certified B Corporation. The independent media company, which operates brands across the sustainability, utilities and visual communications industries, has embarked upon the B Corp journey as part of its aim to be a force for good among its employees, audiences, suppliers and the environment.
