The society has been formed by groups including the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM), the Institute of environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) and the Royal Meteorological Society. It is intended to raise the profile of the environment profession, with one key objective being to establish a new qualification of Chartered Environmentalist (C.Env).

“The environment profession is a vibrant but disparate community of professionals,” noted Chairman of the Society’s steering group Dr Will Pope. It is hoped that SocEnv will also raise standards of professional practice, and will provide a focal point for collective action. “What we have done has the support of Government, employers and environmental agencies. This is a huge leap forward for the profession,” he said.
