Somerset residents have been told to use recycling banks responsibly or risk having them withdrawn.

Mendip District Council says its sites have been plagued with recyclables dumped outside the bins, a problem common throughout the land, and smashed glass is causing a health risk.

The local authority has taken the step of warning residents that if the over-use it, they lose it.

Mendip District Council’s senior waste management officer, David Rosser, said: “While we are delighted that so many people are recycling, it is important that the public use the recycling bins properly to secure their future within these very accessible locations across the district.

“If this problem continues, then potentially some of these site owners including a number of supermarkets could tell us that they no longer want the facilities there.”
