Recycling hits the big screen at Odeon Cinemas

The Odeon Cinema Group has embarked on a drive to double recycling rates by the end of 2014 across all of its theatre sites in the UK.

Biffa has secured its largest order of trade waste bins from the Group and will be rolling out 312 twin sets across the Odeon Cinema network by the end of next July.

The contractor will then work with Odeon to implement the new recycling system, and expects that up to 20% of additional waste recycled will be captured through the new bins.

Odeon will also be promoting the new recycling service on screen adverts, shown nationally, at the beginning of each film.

Odeon Cinema Group procurement manager Colette Millican said the system would be an excellent way to manage recycling as it is cost-effective and easy to use.

“We are delighted to be able to provide a recycling option in guest areas at all of our cinemas across the UK,” she added.

All types of dry mixed recycling can be recycled in the bins, including plastic bottles, cans, paper and card. Once collected, materials will be sorted and segregated at Biffa’s material recycling facilities in Trafford Park, Aldridge & Edmonton.

Commenting on the deal, Biffa’s industrial & commercial sale director Daren King said: “It is a clear demonstration of the importance that both industries place upon environmental responsibility.

“It also makes very good business sense for Odeon Cinemas. Coupled with the increasing costs of landfill tax, integrated contracts such as this have become the most economical way for businesses of all sizes to manage their recycling.”
